Brantford Arts Block

Artist Spotlight: Celine Garneau

Share a little bit about yourself and what you create.
I’m Celine Garneau, and I’m a photographer. I’ve lived in the Grand Woodlands area of Brantford all my life. I really like how quiet and hidden away the area is. I have been photographing for about 6 years now, and am just finishing up my second year of college for photography this year.

What is your creative process like and what inspires it?
I don’t really have a creative process. It changes with every project I pursue. I think an important part of being a photographer is versatility. Since I’ve been in school for photography, I have found that I am more open to different kinds of photography. I’m now more comfortable in a studio setting, but I still do enjoy shooting photos outside. My surroundings really inspire the photographs I create. Finding new places gives me a lot of excitement, because I don’t know what I’m going to find there.

What has been your favourite creative moment?
When I was applying to go to school for photography, I was really worried I wasn’t going to get accepted anywhere. I ended up getting accepted at all four schools I applied to. That was really exciting for me, I felt like I was really on my way to getting my dream job.

What else do you enjoy doing with your time?
When I’m not photographing, I’m still usually doing something that is photography related – editing, planning shoots, and homework. Besides that, I like to crochet, listen to music, read and when I can, sleep.

Does creativity run into your family? If so, who is creative and what do they do?
My mom used to draw quite a bit. My dad is into woodworking. And my Babcia used to knit and make clothes.

Where would you like your art to take you?
I would love to make photography my full time job.

How long have you lived in Brantford?
I’ve lived in Brantford my whole life, but have recently moved out to go to school in Welland. But I’ll be returning when this school year is over.

What is your favourite restaurant in town?
Living out of town for school, when I come home I most like to make food at my house the most. Mostly because i’m cheap and because it’s easy for me to make vegetarian things instead of ordering them at a restaurant

What local spaces or landmarks do you find inspiring?
When I first started getting into photography, I would go to the river by Wilkes Dam. I found it to be a nice quiet area to get away. I still head down there when I get the chance.

What change would you like to see in Brantford?
I would love to see more of an art scene in Brantford, but with the Arts Block, I can really see it start to come together.
